Most of the commentary on this page is about the mechanics of viewing the American Cetacean Society (ACS) national web site. This site is best viewed with the more recent versions of the major browsers (and a new high resolution monitor of course), but the vast majority of the pages are also compatible with old and less popular browsers, and smaller viewing areas -- the pages won't look quite the same on WebTV or real old versions of IE -- won't be nearly as attractive, but will function - if this is not the case, please let the webmaster know the specifics. Javascript is needed to fully appreciate the site but not for anything critical. If your viewing platform doesn't support javascript, or you have it disabled, you only see small copies of the photos and the illustrations, and you won't see the drop down menus. These are all nice features but aren't mandatory. If you have disabled javascript for security concerns, you might want to ask your computer person about the differences between java and javascript. Newer versions of IE may also block these functions, calling them as 'Active Content'. We say it's safe but also recommend that you take security seriously and evaluate the risks for yourself. Almost all the pages on the site were designed to look best with an screen width of 1024, but almost all of the pages will compress down to 800 pixels (and narrower when possible) and will also expand in width out to 1600 pixels and more - this makes it so things may look a little different on a page depending on how it is viewed, so if you experience a problem, please at least guesstimate the size of your browser window at the time when you report the problem to the webmaster. This site offers MP3 clips - a MP3 player probably came with your computer, but just in case, here are some places you can go to download free media players: The site also offers files in PDF format: Get the free Acrobat Reader. |
