at the 2002 ACS Conference in Seattle

John & Muriel Olguin were the honorees at the Saturday night Banquet at the American Cetacean Society's 9th International Conference in November 2004 on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California.

This page is under development. The following is an excerpt from the 2002 Conference Program

John Olguin was born in San Pedro, CA on February 18, 1921. He was employed by the City of Los Angeles, Dept. of recreation and Parks for 50 years. A lifeguard captain at Cabrillo Beach who would amaze beachgoers by somehow always knowing when the migrating gray whale was going to blow or breach for a second and third time. In 1949 he was the Director of Cabrillo Marine Museum in San Pedro, CA., and is currently the Director Emeritus of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.

As a charter member of ACS and the founder of the Cabrillo "Whalewatch" program in San Pedro, John was instrumental in developing whale watching as the industry we now of today. John lives in San Pedro with his artist/painter wife Muriel of 53 years.

John is famous for his "DO IT-DO IT" way of teaching young and old alike.
